HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 6, 2010 – Last year’s champion, Team Hurley, is set to return to defend their title at the 2010 Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge presented by Primo, which will commence for two consecutive days of competition between Jan. 12-17 on the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier. Team Reef is also registered to return and improve upon their runner-up position from last year, as well as, last year’s fourth-place finisher Team Fox.
Each team will consist of four athletes, including a crosshatch of both established and up-and-coming talent, who will compete both individually and as teams in an open-draw four-man heat format. Surfers will receive points in each heat (4 pts for 1st, 3 pts for 2nd, 2 pts for 3rd and 1 pt for 4th place). The teams and individuals earning the most points will share in more than $28,000 worth of cash and prizes with payouts going to the top four teams and top eight individuals.
Huntington Beach’s own Brett Simpson, who led Team Hurley to victory and earned the individual title as well last year, is expected to front the Hurley team once again. Simpson is coming off of a stellar 2009 season that saw him win the $100,000 U.S. Open of Surfing title (the richest surfing prize in history) and qualify for the 2010 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, which begins in Feb. (Simpson is awaiting final word from the ASP on whether he can surf in the event.) Also surfing for Hurley will be Brad Ettinger, Brandon Guilmette and Conner Coffin.
Returning after more than a decade since competing at the event is two-time past Katin Pro/Am Champion and three-time former World Champion, the legendary Tom Curren. Curren, who first claimed the Katin title in 1982 and then again in 1987, will anchor the Rip Curl team. Shaun Ward, Sean Taylor and Adam Lambert will round out Team Rip Curl.
Last year’s second-place team, Reef, unites Ben Bourgeois, Mike Losness, Chris Waring and Nick Rosza who will try for the win. Team Matix featuring Gabe Kling, Micah Byrne, Ricky Whitlock and Tyler Stanaland will make their debut appearance in the event.
