(July 9, 2013 — Encinitas, CA) – The 9th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf contest and concert returns to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas on July 13, 2013
. An annual event near and dear to Switchfoot’s heart, the Bro-Am was created to give back to the San Diego community while benefiting local children’s charities through funds raised at a pre-event auction night soiree, as well as from vendors on the beach day-of, corporate surf team entries, sponsorships, and an after-party at the Belly Up Tavern. Since its inception in 2005, the Bro-Am has raised more than $715,000 for San Diego-based children’s charities. The members of Switchfoot recently created the Switchfoot Bro-Am Foundation to continue their mission of supporting local at-risk, homeless, and street kids year-round.
Bro-Am weekend kicks off on Friday, July 12, with an auction night event at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa at which guests will savor signature dishes from the area’s leading restaurants. The evening will also include a live music performance by Switchfoot, stellar silent and live auctions, opportunity drawings, and an exclusive sneak peek at Switchfoot’s debut feature film, Fading West.
The 9th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am presented by Hurley on July 13 will feature a surf contest, live music performances, and nerf surf jousting exposition between surf contest heats. This year’s event will welcome back the 2nd annual Rob Machado Bro Junior. Open to youngsters ages 16 and under, the Rob Machado Bro Junior places a premium on the competitor having the most fun. Those who have already signed up to participate will compete on one of Rob Machado’s boards, and stick around for the day’s festivities. Rather than a financial donation, entrants bring gently-used surf clothes to the beach on competition day as their entry fee.
Four-person corporate surf teams have secured their participation via sponsorship donation to the Switchfoot Bro-Am Foundation. This year’s Bro-Am will feature riders representing Hurley, Billabong, Surf Ride, Shaper Studios, Chelsea’s Light Foundation, Flat Rock Eats & Drinks, Arnette, Dragon, Encinitas Firefighters Association, Univ, and Macbeth, as well as surf legend Rob Machado, and members of Switchfoot. A free concert on the beach rounds out the beach day festivities, with performances by Switchfoot, Gentlemen Hall, Pacific Air, 78 Violet, and Makua Rothman. But it doesn’t end there. Bro-Am weekend then concludes with the official after-party at Belly Up Tavern, hosted by Switchfoot and featuring performances by Fiction Family, Makua Rothman, and Kelley James.
For those not able to make it to the Bro-Am, the event is working with Action Sports Productions to add a first-ever live webcast, which will stream the surf contest/concert at Moonlight Beach, allowing supporters from around the US and world to tune in and catch the Bro-Am action live at www.switchfoot.com
Expanding upon Bro-Am’s relationship with Hurley H2O, the Bro-Am beach experience is a “single-use plastic water bottle-free event.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a re-usable water bottle to fill up at the H2O station for free, and Hurley H2O provides stainless steel bottles with funds raised supporting nonprofit partners like The Ecology Center.
Continuing its eco-friendly efforts, the Switchfoot Bro-Am will again work with San Diego-based Alternative Power Productions to offer cutting-edge solar-powered sound and staging. Alternative Power Productions utilizes the renewable energy sources of the sun to deliver 100% pollution-free concerts. By using solar power rather than a diesel generator or grid power, the Bro-Am will avoid emitting approximately 1,000 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere (the equivalent of not driving your car approximately 1,100 miles or the annual sequestration of 66 trees).
And new to this year’s event, the Rob Machado Foundation, dedicated to teaching youth about their impact on the environment, will have a team of surfers and environmentalists managing waste at Bro-Am. The Green Team of high school and college students will ensure that as much waste as possible is diverted from the landfill. The team will educate attendees on proper sorting of trash and recyclables as well as tabulating the total landfill diversion rate. The ultimate goal is to empower attendees to reduce their trash footprint beyond the event. For details about the recycling and greening efforts of Bro-Am, please contact Nicole Cruz at firstname.lastname@example.org
To continue to help ease the traffic in the neighboring areas, the Switchfoot Bro-Am will again offer parking and traffic solutions, which include a free shuttle from San Dieguito Academy. We encourage you to utilize the parking lot at City Hall, located at the corner of Vulcan Avenue and E Street. Attendees are also encouraged to take the Coaster.
This year’s beach vendors and sponsors include title sponsor Hurley, Ultimate Ears, Journey’s, official retail partner Surf Ride, Wahoo’s, Harney Sushi, Surfrider Foundation, Pizza Port, Natural High, Clif Bar, Believe In Something, To Write Love On Her Arms, Honest Tea, Christian Surfers Encinitas, INT Softboards, Watershot, Daphne’s California Greek, Cracker Jack’D, Macbeth, Chick-fil-A, 91X, the Belly Up, Chelsea’s Light Foundation, the Rob Machado Foundation, and The Ecology Center.
