Santa Cruz, CA [July 19, 2011] – The Westsiders cast and crew are pleased to announce an exclusive screening of the award-winning documentary this Saturday, July 23rd at 7:30. The film will screen at the El Rio in Santa Cruz, and all proceeds will benefit FleaHab, a project started by Darryl “Flea” Virostko to help surfers dealing with addiction.
The passion for the project stemmed from Flea’s own struggle and recovery. “FleaHab is a place where people who are recovering from addiction can live and get to back to the healthy activities they enjoy,” said Flea.
Tickets are available for $10 each at Arrow Surf & Sport, Pacific Wave, and Santa Cruz Skate & Surf Shop, all located in Santa Cruz.
Since the films premiere screening in Newport Beach early 2010, The Westsiders has taken home more than 7 awards from film festivals around the world. A hometown favorite, the film’s crew has been eager to bring the film back to Santa Cruz.
“We are really hoping to see the support of Santa Cruz come out to our screening on Friday,” said Brian Hirrel, the film’s Executive Producer, ”celebrating the successes that have stemmed from this journey can only be done here.”
From surfing innovations to gritty localism, follow the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf tribe through the eyes of three best friends from the original ‘Surf City’: Santa Cruz, California. Best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing. They live through shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism to achieve their dream of becoming professional surfers before the age of 24. To surf the notorious Steamer Lane, they had to join ‘The Westsiders’ Surf Tribe and go face to face with Vince Collier, aka “The Godfather of The Westside”. Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice. This film explores The Westsiders as the latest chapter in the fascinating history of Santa Cruz, California. Narrated by Rosanna Arquette directed by Joshua Pomer.
