In an unexpected turn of events, John John Florence opted to sit out from the Rip Curl Pro Portugal Expression Session, and sent out his videographer Blake Kueny in his place. Completely unprepared for his World Tour debut, Kueny had to borrow a board from Brett Simpson before paddling out in the nearly vacant lineup at Supertubos. In the 45 minutes that followed, Kueny made a valiant effort to put on a Florence-ian performance, but ultimately fell short, catching one wave and executing a carving turn before digging rail on the following cutback. Kueny is no stranger to the spotlight, having won the Movie of the Year Award at last year’s Surfer Poll for his co-direction of DONE, but this was the first time his surfing rather than filmmaking was on display for the masses. Perhaps this is the beginning of a professional role reversal, and the sequel to DONE will feature Kueny’s surfing as shot by Florence. But probably not.
