SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 23, 2010 – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior will bring the world’s top junior talent to Lower Trestles, Calif., May 4-8, 2010. Running in conjunction with the ASP 6-Star PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro, the Oakley Pro Junior will see 32 men, 20 years and younger, battling for critical ASP regional ratings points to qualify for the World Junior Tour and a $10,000 prize purse in the first U.S. regional stop on the global Oakley Pro Junior series.
“Oakley is excited to be back once again at the wave magnet Lower Trestles,” says Ronny Nelson, Oakley Sports Marketing Manager. “Lowers is by far one of the most rippable waves in the world, and it’s going to be an energized week of surfing with some of the World Tour surfers in town competing in the 6.0 Lowers Pro to build up their points on the ASP World Ranking System. The always-exciting Juniors will also get to take a crack at Lower Trestles. These Juniors have been pushing progressive surfing to the limits in the first two stops on the Junior tour this year and I guarantee they’ll take this event to a new level.”
Last year, former World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HI) claimed the Oakley Pro Junior title after an amazing display of progressive surfing alongside fellow finalists Davey Cathels (AUS), Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA) and Kiron Jabour (Haleiwa, HI), who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
This year will see a bevy of young talent return to Lower Trestles for a chance at the title including: last year’s ASP North America Junior Champion Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), second runner up Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA) and third and fourth-place finishers Keanu Asing (Ewa Beach, HI), currently ranked #4, and Luke Davis (Capistrano Beach, CA), currently ranked #3. They’ll be joined by current ASP North America Junior #1 ranked Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and #2 ranked Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA).
The international onslaught will be led by last year’s World Junior Championship top eight finalists Maxime Huscenot (REU), Jadson Andre (BRA), Gabriel Medina (BRA), Alejo Muniz (BRA) and Granger Larsen (Maui, HI), as well as, Mitch Crews (AUS) and Hiroto Arai (JPN).
Jacob Halstead (La Jolla, CA) and Cristobal De Col (PER) have earned the coveted Oakley wildcard spots.
The Oakley Pro Junior global series will hit Port Alfred, South Africa just prior to the Trestles event from April 30-May 2 for an ASP Men’s Grade 2 and Women’s Grade 1 event. View the complete schedule at oakleyprojunior.com.
