Filled with Empty Space

Rob Gilley

Previously in denial about his photographic past, Rob Gilley now rummages through his trove of mediocrity.

Experienced editors know that applying standard, wordy captions to empty wave images is like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa—usually an inappropriate and unnecessary effort. A wag at best. Deeper-meaning lines from poems can be a better fit, but poetry's usual antiquated themes tend to bloat. No, strangely—surprisingly—the best word companions for wave shots tend to be written by…1970's musicians.

I'm completely serious. It's weird. Check these photos and then take a look at the lyrics below and see if you don't agree. And if you don't, you can just throw me into the capsule with all the other space cadets.

The long night passing
Electrons dancing
In the frozen crystal dawn

Here's one left stranded
At the zero crossing
With a hole in its half life
Left to carry on.
