Brazilian pro surfer Ricardo dos Santos is in critical condition after suffering three gunshot wounds. Details are still trickling in at this point, but initial reports suggest that he was attacked near the beach outside his home after confronting a group of men openly using drugs near children. The men left following the altercation, but one of them turned a gun on dos Santos, shooting him three times in the abdomen. Dos Santos was rushed to a hospital where he has undergone surgery, and is reported to be in critical condition.

This (translated) message was posted on Ricardo’s official Facebook page this morning:

“The violence Ricardo suffered this morning was cowardly and absurd. He boarded a helicopter and was taken to a hospital in San Jose. We ask for all those who follow our Ricardo to send positive vibes and prayers, that with much love and pride he’ll recover soon and be back surfing perfect waves around the planet.”

Outside magazine is reporting that two suspects have been arrested. One suspect is said to be an off-duty police officer [possibly military police] from a neighboring county.

According to Andrei Malhado, Dos Santos’ manager, “[He] suffered hemorrhage in the liver, spleen, intestine, and in the vein that takes blood back to [the] heart. A second surgery stopped the bleeding in the vein and took 45 blood bags." He’s also been placed in a medically induced coma, reported Brazilian surf magazine, Hardcore.

On his social media channels, Adriano De Souza wrote that Dos Santos has undergone multiple surgeries, but lost a lot of blood in the process. He went onto encourage people interested in helping to donate blood.

Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.
