Filmmaker and Korduroy.tv creator Cyrus Sutton premiered his new movie, Stoked and Broke, last week to a packed crowd at the Arthouse Cinema in Long Beach. Cyrus, along with Encinitas pro surfer Ryan Burch, redefine what a modern day surf safari can be —by taking off on a journey that harnesses the do-it-yourself mentality and the pure stoke of riding waves.

The two embark on an eight-day, 30-mile walkabout along the San Diego coastline without a dollar to their names, and only the bare necessities to surf and scrounge. They find ways to survive by selling oranges and sage, begging for spare change, and eating dog food. Along with searching for their next meal and wave, the two meet up with people who share their wisdom on how to forever live the surfing stoke—including a homeless person who sheds light on where to sleep so “the man” doesn’t bust you.

“Ever since Endless Summer, we’ve been sold on the idea of traveling to some exotic land to find our Eden,” said Sutton. “I hope this film just shows surfers that stoke is all around us; all we’ve got to do is open our eyes.”

While at times it felt a bit slow, the film has a lot of heart and soul. In an age where the majority of surf films are marketing platforms for companies’ athletes, Stoked and Broke reminds us of why we picked up a surfboard for the first time—and how easy it is to find your next surf excursion.
