The Xcel Pro Showdown at Supertubes, slated for J-Bay this June, is excited to announce two new awards in 2010: Best Barrel of the Contest, and Best Junior Surfer (under 20) of the Contest.
The winner of each will receive R5,000 for their efforts, with the ultimate Showdown at Supertubes winner walking away with automatic entry into the VonZipper Trials for the Billabong Pro World Tour Supertubes event scheduled for late July.
Dylan Lightfoot, Steven Sawyer, Bertie Stuurman, and Remi Peterson are just four junior surfers who turned in stand-out performances at Supertubes ’09 and will be gunning for Best Junior Surfer honors. More under-20 athletes will be thrown into the mix when the final invitee list is announced shortly.
Both new Showdown at Supertubes awards are made possible by international software company Island Pacific, as event co-sponsor. Island Pacific has long supported the surf industry and street brands in the United States, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific.
“We’re very pleased with Island Pacific offering these awards,” notes Xcel’s Koffie Jacobs. “Any event at Supertubes is going to be all about the barrels. And our junior surfers are our future – we need to look after them and reward them accordingly. This is a great way to get them competing at the very best of their ability.”
The event will be filmed by Silver Bullet productions. Energy will be supplied by Red Bull. DaKine, Billabong, Nixon, Sector 9, VonZipper, and Kustom are co-sponsors; and JBU will be in charge of water patrol. Xcel also proudly announces new media partner Zigzag Magazine, who will be hosting an online event portal at www.zigzag.co.za.
