The, high-flying, Maverick’s-charging, superhero wetsuit-wearing, barrel-rolling always-colorful Shawn “Barney” Barron passed away on Tuesday night. He was 44. An unconfirmed report cited a heart attack as the cause of death, but we will update this post as we learn more.
SURFING last saw Barney two weeks ago in his hometown of Santa Cruz, volunteering his time with Operation Surf, a program that takes combat wounded veterans surfing. He was smiling big, face colored in multicolored zinc, helping other people discover the joy of surfing. It was a joy he experienced deeper than most.
The surf world, and anyone else that knew him, will miss him greatly.
