The 2008 PacSun USA Surf Team is assembled and ready to take on the world
New US team menber Luke Davis
Joey Buran looks like a general. Clipboard. Tracksuit. Cap. Eyes that bleed red, white and blue –– he's clearly loving this new gig as U.S. Team coach. And this week in Huntington he got his first glimpse at what his U.S. Surf Team will have to offer the world at the Team Trials. Directing. Motivating. And psyching up his new team you could clearly see the competitive juices start flowing. The 1984 Pipe Master is definitely ready to take the team to where it belongs.
Buran has made it clear from the beginning that he's going after the big name kids to make sure this year's team is stacked. After months of recruiting and a grueling week of trials and competition, he's now got his army. And needless to say, it's definitely stepped up. Adding flare and depth with new guys like the flashy Andrew Doheny coupled with veterans to the team like Sage Erickson the 2008 PacSun USA Surf Team is officially ready to take on the world and will hands down be the best we've seen yet. "The biggest thing we did this year was go out and get kids," said Buran of his aggressive recruiting this year. "We wanted to make sure the best surfers in the U.S. under-18 were all here to represent their country. And I feel really good about the team we selected."
This past Sunday night after the contest the boys and girls had their first after-comp re-fuel and pep rally at Fred's in Huntington Beach. Everyone grinded fajitas and soda while flaunting their newly earned USA tracksuits and met their new teammates. With a lot of new faces, its obvious Buran went all out to make sure his team is packed with talent. Names like Dillon Perillo, Evan Geiselman, Kolohe Andino, Sage Erickson, Luke Davis, Nat Young and Kiron Jabour will lead the stacked team in the months to come. The team of 32 surfers will now begin training and competing against other squads and will then a squad of 12 will be chosen as the "Travel Squad." They will then be off to France in May for the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships where they will get the chance to bring the gold back to the states. But first things first. The new squad has a scrimmage with the always tough Australian team Tuesday morning. Go Pats!
