There are so many options for the young amateur surfer trying to have a crack these days. Too many, one might argue.
Although the one who would be arguing it would most likely be an overly stressed mom or dad who hasn’t had a free weekend since February and has already had to buy a new set of tires for their 2016 Honda Odyssey minivan. And don’t even get me started about all those oil changes. Basically keeping Jiffy Lube out of the red at this point.
But for everyone else, there are just enough amateur surf events. Still, some are better than others. And Volcom’s Totally Crustaceous Tour is better than most.
For one, it’s free. The TCT holds events all over the world (more info here), allowing kids aged 20 and under to show up and take a shot at glory for the price of nothing. And if they find glory — or the podium — they are invited to compete in the International Championships at Lowers. That chrome-wheeled, fuel-injected event is next week. And the waves are going to be firing.
Starting Tuesday, Southern California’s favorite set of cobblestones will be taken over by the world’s best young surfers. The final two days will be webcasted at tct.volcom.com. Go ahead and pencil it into your agenda. On second thought, pen it in. It’ll be well worth it.
