He’s a celebrity.
Bona fide. Anywhere, everywhere he goes. People see him and they recognize him. They celebrate him. He kisses babies, shakes hands, feigns laughter. It’s not a bad life for a king. Only shame is that celebrity and solitude rarely cross paths. But sometimes.
Sometimes, they do. And maybe Kelly wasn’t the only guy out this day, but there certainly wasn’t a hoard of infant foreheads awaiting his tender kiss on the beach. This moment of relative solitude occurred during the tail end of the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal waiting period. You can see it in motion here. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is the solitude.
And it matters because it’s fleeting. In just a few weeks, the whole world will once again be watching (and celebrating) Kelly as he hucks a Hail Mary towards a World Title at Pipe. Gabriel Medina and Mick Fanning stand in his way, and it’ll produce more drama than a Jersey Shore cast reunion in 10 years when they’re all old and fat from eating steroids but not working out yet still wearing exceptionally tight clothing/starting to look like a more Italian Jon Bon Jovi (both sexes). And if you go, bring an infant.
