Once a week, for the next five weeks, SURFING will bring you the stories behind each of our senior staff photographers’ careers. They all got their foot into the surf industry’s door the old school way, before Baby Cobras (consider yourself lucky).
Week three: Santa Cruz, California’s Corey Wilson is new to the SURFING roster but his imagery has already proven that he is here to stay. This week we display his recent score from Mainland Mexico in 23 self-captioned photographs.
Corey:I started working at SURFING Magazine in February and within the first two weeks was sent on my first trip to Australia to cover the Snapper and Bells WT events. In between contests I was able to link up with Pat and Tanner Gudauskas in West Oz and photograph them surfing some really dreamy waves. Everything seemed to fall into place and I ended up spending about 2 months over there shooting photos and having the time of my life.
My second trip was to Brazil to shoot images for the “On Location” issue. I stayed with Thiago “Shrimpy” Camarao and traveled a lot to catch the sites and see as much as we could. We scored some great waves and were able to meet up with some of Brazil’s best surfers along the way. The most interesting thing I noticed about Brazil was the contrasting castes of living. As we drove through Rio we witnessed two pedestrian deaths on the freeway, all while we were in transit to a 14-bedroom mansion. That trip was an eye opener for sure.
So far, my position at SURFING has allowed me to travel to Australia, Brazil, Mainland Mexico, and the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. I have seen some of the most beautiful places in the world and have learned a lot through each culture I have visited. Traveling and photographing some of the best surfers in the world is something that I would have never been able to accomplish if I wasn’t working at SURFING. I feel like I have the best job in the world and have learned through this process that hard work and an appreciation for learning can really pay off.
