You’ve seen the photos. You’ve heard the stories. You’ve watched the contest every year and you’ve probably even dreamt a little dream about that very super bank of sand. But have you ever actually been to Australia’s Gold Coast?
If not, then SURFING Senior Photographer Corey Wilson is here to help. Even if you have been and plan on going back, his tips are worth your time. Read them below and see some of Corey’s favorite photos from his time spent Golden up top.
Stay at Rainbow Bay Apartments
They overlook Snapper and everybody stays there during the Quiksilver Pro. It’s relatively cheap and the owners are amazing — definitely the best place to be, even when the CT isn’t in town.
Go to Bambi for a cup of coffee
I swear it’s the best in the world. I usually put cinnamon in my coffee, but it’s so good that I don’t even have to put anything in it. It smells so good in there too.
There a bunch of good restaurants on the strip in Coolangatta, but Sushi Train is my favorite. You definitely have to go there while visiting. Or just barge into Wilko’s house for a barbecue.
Go to the Gold Coast Turf Club
You can bet on horses there and it’s so fun. Plus there are so many girls and everyone is having a great time. It’s your best bet for flat day fun.
Hold a koala bear
There’s a place called Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and they literally let you hug a koala bear. There are a ton of other cool animals in there too — you can hang out in a field of kangaroos and feed them. It’s the best.
Be prepared to have horrible internet
If you’re trying to avoid spending a lot of money, make sure you only use the internet at cafes and restaurants. It’s super expensive to get a little wifi thing and keep recharging it with data.
Avoid hard alcohol
They measure the alcohol that goes into every single mixed drink you order when you’re out, so it’s really hard to get drunk off those. Beer is your best bet and it’s still pretty expensive. Or you can drink cheap wine. Purple teeth is always a good look.
