Derek Hynd And His Finless Horse

Friction-free sessions at Jeffreys Bay

Remember when Mick Fanning was attacked during the live J-Bay Open webcast? Well, during the post-attack coverage, less than an hour after the incident had occurred, there was a man seen paddling a behemoth of a board up the point behind the backs of the commentators, seemingly without a care that the three-time World Champion had just almost been mauled. That man was Derek Hynd. That board was one of his Far Field Free Friction designs, an 11’6″ finless surf craft. And this footage is from the sessions that followed the Great White encounter. Mixed in is a clip of Kelly Slater running the point and a few others shots of Emi Erickson riding a vintage single fin.
