HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Wednesday, January 5, 2011) - For the second consecutive year, The Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge will represent the season opener for ASP North America when the ASP Specialty event unfolds at the north side of Huntington Beach Pier on January 7 and 8, 2011. The unique event will see teams look to put forth their best combined effort to earn the bragging rights of best surf team in America.

The low-pressure team event utilizes the traditional four-man ASP Star Series format, with each surfer gaining points for their respective team as they advance through their heats while the four-man teams look to take top honors by posting the top combined-score.

"The Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge has a rich history here in Huntington Beach and the ASP is happy to welcome it back as our season opener for 2011," Meg Bernardo, ASP North America Executive Manager said. "With Katin's list of legendary champions over the years it's great to have an event that has stretched over 30 years as a part of our regional tour."

Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), 23, defending Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge Champion, led Team Reef to victory in 2010 with an impressive come-from-behind win in the final and is motivated to defend his title at the historic event on his home turf.

"Winning the event last year meant a lot because it was so prestigious," Waring said. "Just seeing my name alongside guys like Tom Curren, Sunny Garcia, Kelly Slater and Michael Ho, it's a crazy feeling. All I can do this year is just take one heat at a time focus on the heat and go from there, but its hunger the drives me to win and stay focused."

Top names competing in the 2011 Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge include former ASP World Champions Tom Curren (Santa Barbara, CA), 46, and Sunny Garcia (Waianae, HI), 39, as well as former ASP Dream Tour surfers Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), 29, and Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 22, amongst others.

The Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge will run from January 7 through 8, 2011 and will be webcast LIVE on  http://www.katinproam.com/
