Lay Day for Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico (Friday, August 14, 2009) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido has opted to call competition off today due to the small two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf on offer at the infamous break of Playa Zicatela.

Surfers competing at the Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido are out to claim the valuable ratings points towards qualification for the ASP Dream Tour, with the top 15 surfers earning their right to join the globe’s finest 45 competitive surfers in an attempt to claim the title of ASP World Champion.

With today’s small conditions and a promising new swell expected to fill in on Sunday, event organizers have opted to wait for bigger surf to resume competition.

“Due to small surf we’ve decided to put the contest on hold for the day,” Contest director Gary Linden said. “We’re expecting a good swell to fill in and have plenty of time left in the waiting period, so I think it’s best to wait for the new swell.”

11 Round 2 heats were completed yesterday and the day’s top honors went to event standout and Playa Zicatela local Christian Corzo (Puerto Escondido, MEX), who claimed the contest’s first perfect 10-point-ride en route to surfing a near-perfect heat of 19.60 out of 20 while advancing on to Round 3.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am local time for a possible 7am start.
