The end of the Billabong Pro Tahiti led to two of the Tour’s biggest disruptions of the year: John John overtaking Wilko as points leader, that glowing yellow halo suiting JJF quite nicely; and Kelly Slater’s return to form, his winning performance securing a top-10 position, jumping 11 spots to No. 8 and now in striking distance of World Title #12. Next up is California’s rippable cobblestone racetrack, Lower Trestles, and the judges will be looking for things to get radical, the playful-but-powerful Lowers walls a progressive surfer’s skatepark. But there’s no discounting powerful rail-surfing and classic lines, as there’s nowhere with as smooth and stylish a roster of champions as Lowers.
