Entertainers Supporting Surfboards in the Sand

The inaugural “Rip Curl Surfboards in the Sand” event takes place Saturday, September 19, 2009 on the sands next to the Huntington Beach Pier. The City of Huntington Beach Centennial Celebration Committee authorized Surfboards in the Sand (www.SurfboardsInTheSand.com; a.k.a. “SITS”) to honor surf culture and to raise awareness and funding for protecting our coastal environment. Surfrider Foundation and Orange County Coastkeeper are the official beneficiaries of the event.

WHO: Surfboards in the Sand’s own Peter “PT” Townend, the world’s first Pro Surfing Champion, and Rip Curl International Surf Team member Tom Curren will be in attendance, as will female surf legends Linda Benson, the first female World Surfing Champion and rising surf star Courtney Conlogue, winner of the recent 2009 Hurley U.S. Open women’s division. To date, Hollywood celebs confirmed include avid surfers and clean water advocates Gregory Harrison (Chandler in the 1987 cult favorite North Shore; Dr. George Alonzo “Gonzo” Gates on the CBS series Trapper John, M.D.) and Tanna Frederick (stage and independent film actor distinguished for her breakout role in Henry Jaglom’s Hollywood Dreams). Additionally, musical performers The Wheeland Brothers, Nico Adams and Trevor Green will all be lending their talents to supporting the cause with free live entertainment. Athletes and company representatives from SITS title sponsor Rip Curl and official surf media sponsor TransWorld SURF, will also be in attendance. Other celebrities, dignitaries and sponsors are being announced on a daily basis.

WHAT: Newsworthy assets include: Exclusive pre-event and event onsite interview opportunities with surfing legends and contemporary surfing stars, as well as film and TV celebrities (see “WHO,” above). High-resolution celebrity images are available now, and high-res event and video will be made available immediately following the event. In addition, Surfboards In The Sand offers an historic group photo opportunity, with potentially thousands of surfers in a record-breaking group shot.

WHEN: Saturday, September 19, 2009. Two times are available for onsite media interview opportunities: 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. and after 11:00 a.m. – please call in advance for scheduling assistance. Participants with their boards are asked to be in place on the sand by 10:00 for the historic photo opp to be shot from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
