Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic (DR)
Christopher Columbus, the original sightseer of the Dominican Republic's North Coast, named the area's first city Puerto Plata or "Silver Port" in 1942 due to the effect that the sun made on the water as his ship approached land. Today, the DR's North Coast is the perfect combination of both relaxation and adventure, as Puerto Plata and surrounding beach towns of Cofresí, Cabarete, and Sosúa boast the best in sun, sand and of course, surf. In fact, Cabarete is nicknamed "The Kiteboard Capital of the World" because it offers consistent eastern trade winds and warm water, ideal for any water sports enthusiast. Here, visitors aren't tourists, but travelers – where late-night merengue dancing, thrilling eco-adventure, chic accommodations, luxe pampering, prehistoric culture and warm hospitality all collide. For more information on Puerto Plata, visit the DR Ministry of Tourism's official website: www.GoDominicanRepublic.com.
