Matt Banting Crowned King of the Groms!

The Australian Matt Banting has today earned the King of the Groms Crown on the right-hand waves of the Bourdaines Beach at Seignosse. The 15-year-old team Quiksilver surfer has battled for the most significant title of his age category for the last two years. Beaten by Maxime Huscenot in 2008 and by record-breaking Gabriel Medina in 2009, the Australian from Port Macquarie on the East Coast, finally got his revenge in the most important global competition for surfers aged 16 or less.

The protégé of Mick Campbell was stunning on this, the last day of competition. Already in the semi-finals, Matt Banting had taken care of Slade Prestwich with his enormous snaps and his reverses, seeking perfection from each wave (the Australian scored 19.34 out of 20, against 3.63 points scored by the South African).

In the final, the day's winner came up against an impressive Filipe Toledo who surfed outstandingly throughout the event. The Brazilian was somewhat unknown before the event, but gained the highest single wave score of the competition, 9.93 out of 10, in the semi-final against the valiant Portuguese surfer Vasco Ribeiro. During the final man-on-man heat of the competition the Brazilian wasn't helped by the conditions. In a heat somewhat lacking in waves, the Brazilian allowed himself to be outwitted by Banting who was full of confidence and at the top of his technical game (17.27 points for Matt against 14.57 for Filipe).

Matt Banting adds this crown to his trophy cabinet already stuffed with national titles including being 2010 ISA World Champion. This new prestigious trophy propels him ever closer to the big time. Thanks to his success in Seignosse, the Australian also earns a place in the trials of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, the first event of the ASP World Tour 2011. Tomorrow, Thursday 30th September, the ASP World Tour event, the Quiksilver Pro France will continue its second round where everything is at stake because to lose here means elimination.

The competition will commence with the 4th heat of round 2 and a duel between Damien Hobgood (USA) and Travis Logie (South Africa).
