The 2010 Xcel Pro Showdown at Supertubes will return to J-Bay once again, with a waiting period set for May 1 through 31.
After a highly-successful inaugural event last year, Xcel will upgrade the 2010 specialty event with an all-new Web site and competition format.
The Xcel Pro Showdown at Supertubes winner will receive automatic entry into the VonZipper Trials for the Billabong Pro World Tour Supertubes event scheduled for late July.
With just one day required to complete competition, May is a prime month for Supertubes, as solid swells frequently combine with offshore winds. The invite-only* contest will bring together J-Bay locals and specialists familiar with threading many a Supers barrel.
2009’s Xcel Pro Supertubes ran on one of the best days of the year. “We have quite a hard act to follow after last year’s waves and level of performance,” notes Xcel South Africa’s Koffie Jacobs. “I’m confident that Supers will deliver another epic day – it really brings out the best in these guys, and it’s a real treat to watch them pushing it to the next level.”
“I can’t wait for this year’s edition of the Xcel Pro Supers,” says Ryan Payne, 2009 Xcel Pro Supertubes champion. “What can be better than yourself and three mates out at the best pointbreak in the world?”
“We’re all winners at the end of the day, but making it two in a row would be unreal,” adds Payne of his goals for this year’s event. “I feel really fit at the moment and have four new boards on the way, so I am chomping at the bit for the next swell.”
The event will be filmed by Silver Bullet productions. Energy will be supplied by Red Bull. DaKine, Billabong, Nixon, Sector 9, VonZipper, and Kustom are co-sponsors; and JBU will be in charge of water patrol. Xcel also proudly announces new media partner Zigzag Magazine, who will be hosting an online event portal.
