The mainstream media’s coverage of surfers always leaves a weird taste in your mouth, a discomfort akin to wearing shoes on the beach, or seeing a teacher in public. There’s not technically anything wrong with it, I guess, but it sure feels like there is. Here, Kelly Slater’s interview is no exception, as he opens up while answering pretty much the first ten questions any outside journalist would ask a surfer. Still, he pulls it off, claiming his devout love of surfing while elaborating on his plans to continually improve past his mid-century mark. It’s Slater in a different light, CNN’s “King of Surfing,” the perpetual face of our sport.
