This round’s on the WSL, hey? From Commissioner Perrow: "The WSL is the world's best surfers in the world's best waves and the extension is an illustration of our commitment to that philosophy. It's a significant financial, personnel and energy expenditure for the league, but we're passionate about the world's best surfing and we're excited to see what this swell brings." Corpo-babble aside, this means that we’ll tune into webcasts late this week from around the world and get to watch the Top 34 and who’s left of the Top 17 in cyclone swell instead of Snapper slop. It took some logistical nightmares and elbow grease to pull this off, sure, but most of all it took wads of cash. Rumors start in the $100K range, quite an investment for the addition of two days onto that swell window. The WSL doesn’t want you or me to give up on them after the first Tour stop of the year, and they’re signing the check to make sure we get the world’s best in the world’s best, as promised. Here’s hoping for a solid return on investment, if not only for the sake of our entertainment as surf fans. SURFER approves…as long as that swell shows up.
