Surfing Magazines Art Of Surfing Is On This Sunday

Surfing as an art form is about to be recognized in a big way. On August 19, the city of Del Mar, along with SURFING Magazine, Hurley International and Active Ride Shop present the Art of Surfing, a daylong festival celebrating the rich culture of surfing. The free event being held at The Powerhouse Park in Del Mar will host a huge surf contest, in honor of Rusty Del Mar’s 20th anniversary. The contest is open to everybody who wants to surf alongside longboard legend Joel Tudor and several other pros who are already entered in various divisions of the contest. If competing isn’t your thing, then there are a handful of avenues to explore. The festival will also showcase the world’s biggest names in shaping including Rusty, Al Merrick, Jon Carper, Doc Lausch and Robert August displaying their take on the art of surfing with custom shaped pieces of art. Surfing’s most inspiring photographers and artists will also be displaying work from Thomas Campbell, Wolfgang Bloch, Rob Machado, Flame and SURFING’s own Steve Sherman. On top of that, enjoy the art with a full belly of food provided from Wahoo’s and live music from The Pawn Shop Kings and Years Around the Sun.After the music and when the sun goes down, Machado will be hosting his own Masterpiece Theater as he plays his seven favorite surf film segments in larger-than-life format. From 10 to 10, twelve straight hours of Surfing as Artform at its finest. Be sure to make a day of it. SCHEDULE FOR THE ART OF SURFING
