Peter Miller Dies In Tragic Plane Crash

On March 8, 2006, 32 year-old Peter Miller of Kailua, Oahu died while piloting a Hawaii Air Ambulance when the twin-engine Cessna 414 crashed into a {{{BMW}}} dealership on Maui. Peter is survived by brothers Michael and Tony; parents, Barbara and Emmett; sister-in-law, Jennifer; and nephew, Evan.



Peter grew up surfing Oahu’s windward side with the late Jason Bogle, who died of cancer in 2004. Miller and Bogle quickly made a name for themselves on the North Shore and in surf contests during the ’90s.

After a successful amateur career, Peter pursued flying in the footsteps of his father, Tony, who was also a pilot. He also continued to compete professionally, entering the Macy’s E-Series Surf contests. Yet, it was Peter’s performances at East Side surf breaks like North Beach and Crouching Lions that kept his name on the tip of the surf industry tongue on Oahu.

Peter was known to always take the young Kailua kids under his wing, even giving them his old surfboards. A special fund has been started in Peter’s name: “Peter Miller’s Surf Foundation for the Kids of Kailua.” This fund was created to keep his dream alive for generations to come. This fund we will be able to provide surf equipment for those less fortunate and serve as a tribute the lasting memory of Peter’s generosity.

A fundraiser will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at Chai’s Island Bistro in Aloha Tower Market Place. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to “Peter Miller’s Surf Foundation for the Kids of Kailua.” Doors open at 10 p.m.
