T-Shirts For A Cause

SURFING Magazine

The shirts are designed by the children themselvesOn Saturday August 18th, the Finding Pura Vida T-Shirt release party was held in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Held from 7 to 9 pm at the Redux studio, over {{{100}}} surfers and friends of the project turned out for a good cause, and to purchase unique t-shirts.Put on by local Charleston surfer Tim McManus, the t-shirts were created in partnership with the Quiksilver Foundation in order to benefit orphaned children in Costa Rica at the Hospicio de Hurfanos. Each year, the volunteers at Hearts of Stone put on a surf clinic for the children. The money raised from these t-shirts goes directly to that surf camp and also to help pay the mortgage at the orphanage. And since the children’s artwork graces the shirts, this project doubles at a little entrepreneurship for them as well. With the goal of selling around {{{200}}} t-shirts at a cost of $20 each, the event quickly raised much of the money needed to help fund this year’s event. Free beer, pizza, and live music certainly didn’t damper any spirits as the crowd turned out with cash in hand.”It is amazing to earn the support of the Quiksilver Foundation” says McManus, who is the media director for the Pura Vida No Pro. “We are thrilled to have provided support to these children for the last five years and this rewarding project will provide an elevated impact.””We are touched by the passion and commitment of everyone at Hearts of Stone, and are happy to support this project to generate funds for Costa Rican orphans and the Casa de Suenos” said Kathie Armstrong, Quiksilver Foundation Executive Director. “Quiksilver is committed to encouraging and cultivating creative expression, whether it is on a canvas or on a wave. With this project, the Quiksilver Foundation is able to combine two of the most essential elements of the mountain and wave lifestyle, art and surfing, and leverage them to benefit some of the most deserving youth in the world.”
