Dane and Jordy on Fire at Nike Lowers Pro Thursday

If you're still wondering who the two best competitive surfers in the world are, you can put your mind to rest—they are Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith. Proof was had in Heats #13 and #24 of the 6.0 Lowers Pro today when Reynolds and Smith put on performances that can only be described as awe-inspiring.

In double-overhead waves that Reynolds called "huge," the California kid carved and improvised his way through spontaneous backside 360s and combinations of maneuvers that are the hallmark of the Modern Collective generation. In typical low-key fashion, Reynolds attributed his inspired performance to the conditions, noting, "You want to make your heat just so you can go out there and surf again."

Smith's high-tide Heat #24 domination included a perfect "10" for a wave that would have won any major World Tour event. On the beach he said he was "overwhelmed." Not sure if he meant with the score or the surf or simply the level of surfing. The point is, when a high-performance wave like Trestles is six to eight feet and glassy with long open walls, this new generation of surfers simply overwhelms.

Other standouts included rising Brazilian star Jadson Andre, John (John) Florence, CJ Hobgood, and some kid from the Canary Islands named Jonathan Gonzales, who, in Heat #19, surfed his way into the editorial plans of every surf editor in the VIP lounge.

Friday is forecast to be pumping again, and with Adriano de Souza pitted against Julian Wilson in Heat #1, who wouldn't tune in? Watch it live at nike6lowerspro.com/live
