After days of tropical rain showers and lacking waves, the clouds parted and the surf picked up this past weekend for the 2nd annual Oakley/Ron Jon Kira Sheppard Surf Camp. The all-girls camp brought together 32 excited young girls, aged eight to 17, for a day of fun surf and personal instruction. Professional surfer Kira Sheppard provided the girls with firsthand insight, one-on-one surf lessons, and instruction on healthy eating, living an active lifestyle, skin protection, having positive attitude, and being environmentally conscious.
All-female surf camps provide girls with a low-pressure way to learn the basics of surfing and the specific do's and don'ts of the water in an atmosphere that's non-threatening and, more importantly, fun. Surfers received goodie bags filled with clothes, surf gear, fins, gym memberships, personal training sessions, and hair products. One lucky camper even went home with a brand new beautiful Haro Beach Cruiser bike, and another, 10-year-old Loriana, the "Camper of the day," received the ultimate prize-pack: Oakley shades, wardrobe, beach bag, bikinis, a set of Future Fins, and more.
By the end of the day, the girls went home not only feeling accomplished and excited from their day in the surf, but they also carried with them endless tips on saving our planet and taking care of their health.
