Human Touch

Inside the Mind of Matt Meola

Most aspiring pros from the outer islands take the traditional path to surf stardom: they get on a plane to Oahu, embed themselves in the epicenter, and fight tooth and nail for a sliver of the spotlight. Matt Meola, on the other hand, took a more DIY approach. He came out of nowhere to win the inaugural Innersection competition with footage from his home island of Maui, and has been backing up his reputation as one of the world’s most imaginative aerialists ever since.

Private Party:
All my friends and all the Victoria's Secret models.

My Worst:
When I blew out my knee and couldn’t surf for six months, and also when I started getting my red whiskers.

Dream Session:
It would have to be at a secret spot on Maui with the boys, ending with a perfect sunset and a case of beers.

During the Kustom Air Strike trip when we got the devil wind.

World View:
Watching the sunset everyday is the key to happiness.

My Bad:
To anyone I have ever disrespected.

Hall of Fame:
Andy Irons, Hank Moody (from Californication), Will Ferrell, Shane Dorian, Travis Pastrana, Johnny Knoxville, Hank Williams, and Jason Blue.

Inglourious Basterds, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, and True Grit.
