It may not be June 21 yet, but today was a summer day. With the season's usual suspects all in attendance (sun, sand, and an abundance of south swell), day four of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro got off to a quick start as Adriano de Souza provided some poignant foreshadowing in the day's opening heat against Julian Wilson.
De Souza, who relocated to Orange County two years ago, put his local knowledge on display - wasting no time in accumulating big scores and effectively shutting down the heat from the start. "Surfing here every day really helps," said De Souza after his heat. "I had been on the beach since 6 am and I saw it cranking all morning, and thought it might get slow, because I know Trestles right now, and it's good to use that experience."
Adriano, darting jabs in Portuguesa at his Brazilian brethren Jadson Andre and Miguel Pupo (who fell victim to The Jordy yesterday) in the bleachers post-heat, celebrated a triumphant day for the green, gold, and blue. De Souza moved on to the quarterfinals, as did fellow countrymen Heitor Alves, Alejo Muniz, and recent Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro Champion Jadson Andre. "It's great to see Jadson win the Brazil event," said De Souza. "That's really motivating me a lot. The Brazilians are doing really well right now."
While the Brazilians' success proved notable, so too did the impact of surfing's latest and greatest young ambassadors. Dane disappointingly couldn't eke out the scores he needed in Round Three, dropping out quite surprisingly to ASP World Tour rookie Blake Thornton, but John Florence, Sebastian Zietz, Owen Wright, and Jordy Smith proudly showcased the dynamic surfing that has come to characterize their generation. Air reverse on turn #1, fins out inversion on turn #2, swooping carves on turn #3, and why not end things with another air reverse for good measure? It's rhetorical for a reason. That's how you end a wave now. Air reverse.
And Kolohe, wearing his neon yellow-green power suit (not green like a Target contract...green-yellow like Ninja Turtle ooze.) did his part to represent the trend before dropping a close one to Ace Buchan and Chris Davidson in the final moments of his Round Four heat. The beach was pulling for him, hoping to see the neon power suit in full acrobatic tilt as the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro climaxes tomorrow, but we don't always get what we want, now, do we.
Tomorrow promises more great action on the final day of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro, so tune in to the live webcast at http://nike6lowerspro.com/live/.
