Lookout For Wildcards, Slater, Locals, and Bede Durbidge

The 2009 ASP World Tour season is knocking at the door, and if you don’t get up soon, it’s going to pass you by. As the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast hits the starting blocks, we drafted up a list of five things to keep in mind when selecting your Fantasy Surfer Team. Just some advice – take it or leave it. Choose your teams now!

1. The Wildcards Could Make The Difference

One word: Julian Wilson. The most-hyped surfer of 2008 is poised to display his surf skills on the big stage against the big guns (being a wildcard, he’ll draw either Kelly, Bede, or Taj). Many say he’s headed for big things, and this is an opportunity to make a big slash in a big pond. The other wildcard, is Danny Wills. The Byron Bay local knows the right points of the Gold Coast like the Irons brothers know Pipe. Could be a dark horse, or at least a spoiler.

2. Kelly Is Looking For #10

Think Slater won’t be motivated and psyched to annihilate? The World Tour Ninja is poised to win an astonomical 10th world title, and the world is watching and waiting. But keep in mind that in recent years, Kelly has cruised to world titles in large part by not putting pressure on himself, and often starting a World Tour campaign by saying, “I’m not sure if I’m even doing the Tour this year. We’ll see.” Obviously that’s paraphrasing. But it’s not a joke. But no such language from Camp Slater this year. Lots of pressure. Lots.

3. Jordy Could Bloom

Yeah yeah yeah, Jordy had a lackluster Tour in 2008. But that was 2008. Last year, Jordy took some lumps and became a man, and in 09 he’ll feel more comfortable and relaxed. He’ll be hungry to prove that he deserves his spot on tour and his seven-digit salary.

4. Bede Who-bidge?

You still may not know much about Bede, but know this: he silently came in 2nd in the world last year, and he can wax anyone in most conditions. Look for the local to shine..

5. Don’t Forget About The Locals

The Goldy is home to some of the best surfers in the world: Fanning, Parko, Dean Morrison, and others. People are saying this could be Parko’s year. He looks like a boxer in his prime and is surfing 4 hours a day.
