SURFER Magazine is pleased to announce that Secret Spot Surf Shop of Nags Head, North Carolina has officially won the 2019 Mid-Atlantic regional title to secure a spot in the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge National Championship event at Playa Colorado in Nicaragua. Secret Spot Surf Shop earns the prestigious trip to Nicaragua for the second year in a row after a Nationals wild card berth in 2018.
Under extremely challenging 1-2ft conditions, ten teams took to the water at Jennette’s Pier on North Carolina’s Outer Banks for the sixth and final qualifying stop of the 2019 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge series.
Secret Spot Surf Shop had the high score during opening rounds (32.59) while teams representing 7th Street Surf Shop (NJ), 17th Street Surf Shop, Sweetwater Surf Shop, and Duck Village Outfitters also put up solid performances to clinch one of the five coveted spots in the finals. 7th Street Surf Shop from the Northeast region had their sights set on a repeat of 2018 when they made the 14-hour journey to the Outer Banks and claimed the regional title from the Mid-Atlantic.
With severe weather threatening for finals, an event already laden with tough surfing conditions would become even more challenging. In pouring rain, Secret Spot Surf Shop successfully carried their round one momentum into the final heat. They stuck to the strategy they had practiced in the weeks prior and held their ground against the threat of New Jersey’s 7th Street and 17th Street of Virginia Beach. At the final horn it was Secret Spot Surf Shop lifting the regional trophy and punching their ticket to Nationals with a total heat score of 28.6. Runner’s up 17th Street finished the final with a total heat score of 25.68.
Congratulations to Secret Spot Surf Shop team members Mark Peer, Quentin Turko, Stephen Muglia, and Will Deane!
“After getting a taste of the OSSC last year with our wild card win, we knew we had to win this year and go back to Nicaragua,” said Secret Spot’s Mark Peer. “We practiced, ran mock heats, stuck to our game plan and it paid off! Stoked!”
