Last year, frequent Madeira visitor and Save the Waves Coalition director Will Henry helped convince local officials to save Ponto do Sol, a beautiful little right point on the southwest coast. This year, Henry returned to discover that the local government had plans to build a new two-lane wide seawall — right at Jardim do Mar, the island’s seminal big wave pointbreak. Henry teamed up with local environmental group Cosmos and they organized a protest in November that saw over 40 local and visiting surfers express their indignation at the project. Despite being physically and verbally abused during the protest, the surfers got their message heard on numerous local and Portuguese news stations, prompting the mayor to scale the project back to a single walking path which will be built within the existing seawall — not affecting the surf at all.
