Event #5 at Ala Moana Bowls

Mikey Mitchell gets his first win and Kekoa Uemura dominates to take series at the Macy’s E-Series presented by T-Mobile. Very windy with small contestable surf was on hand for the last event of the Macy’s E-Series presented by T-Mobile. With the season ratings very close in both the short and longboard divisions, that helped set the stage for some exciting high performance surfing action.

The shortboard final showcased a great mix of young up and coming surfers, veteran competitor Jason Shibata with his strong vertical backside surfing, took a very aggressive approach to getting waves and got out to an early lead. Ewa Beach’s Mikey Mitchell the lone goofy footer of the finial put the pressure on Shibata by catching one of the best set waves of the heat and carved his way to an eight point ride. With three minutes left Shibata tried to hold position and keep his lead but Mitchell found a gem of a wave and put together some strong maneuvers to take over the lead and win his first professional event. Despite being ousted in round one Raymond Reichle from Sunset Beach was able to hold on to the ratings lead and win the shortboard series title.

The longboard final got off to a slow start with all the surfers trying to jockey for position in the small inconsistent surf. Kekoa Uemura surfed strong throughout the day and kept that momentum to take an early lead in the 25 minute final. Winner of the last event at Sandy Beach Kai Sallas put some pressure on Uemura and was in striking distance for the lead. Keegan Edwards also challenged Uemura for the lead with some smooth carving backhand surfing, but both were unable to find the right waves to surpass Uemura. With the win Uemura pocketed ${{{600}}} and took the overall series title for the longboard division. A big mahalo to Macy’s and T-Mobile for supporting this contest series, and giving these up and coming professional surfers a chance to showcase their surfing talent.

The Macy’s E-Series presented by T-Mobile is a new and unique style of surfing competition geared toward the elite shortboard and longboard surfers in Hawaii, this series is a good stepping stone for these hot up and coming local surfers to sharpen their skills for professional surfing competitions around the world.
