Since our WCT correspondent is currently still in transit to Tavarua (long story), we thought we should update you on the Quiksilver Pro’s early round happenings. The biggest news is that current ratings co-leader, Kelly Slater, was forced to withdraw due to his broken toe. The Billabong Pro Teahupo’o winner hoped to use the same secrets to success at Cloudbreak, but the pain proved too much.Slater wasn’t the surfer plagued with injury. Sunny Garica remains MIA due to his bum knee and Teahupo’o semifinalist Danilo Costa, suffered a possible broken bone in his foot during Round One. He, too, was forced to withdraw. Rounding out the Injured Reserves was perennial tube master Tom Carroll, a wildcard who faced Joel Parkinson in Round Two. Carroll was laying down a bottom turn when he felt the muscle below his left hip snap, aggravating an old injury. He tried to surf on, but eventually paddled over to the on-site medic.Injuries aside, Quiksilver Pro competitors have enjoyed clean, 3- to 5-foot surf for the first two days of competition. Former Quik Pro quarterfinalist Troy Brooks won the trials, followed by Fred Patacchia and Travis Logie. The Freebie Round saw scorching performances from Andy Irons, Guilherme Herdy, Damien Hobgood and Trent Munro.Round two only went five heats deep, with Tom Carroll, Travis Logie, Fred Patacchia, Tim Curran and Mark Occhilupo being the first surfers to be voted off the island. Stay tuned for more coverage as our correspondent should be pulling into his first Cloudbreak barrel by now.
