George W. Bush . . .Pat Buchanan . . .and Daize Shayne?! Wait a minute. We thought Daize was, like, this hippie chick or something. Seems like just yesterday she was dating Joel Tudor and singing Jewel covers at the local open mic. Now, with a full-length album of original songs, her recent engagement to pro surfer and Pipe charger Aamion Goodwin and another longboard world title, she’s come a long way, baby. And then when we heard she was appearing on political talk shows and rocking the Republican National Convention . . .well, we just had to ask.

SURFING: How did you hook up a gig at the Republican National Convention?
DAIZE SHAYNE: My manager is just hooking things up right and left; he’s just super well connected. He sent someone a cover of “Radar Love” that I did, and then they heard it in the White House or something. It’s crazy. Last week we got to play for President Bush in front of 12,000 people in Phoenix. I usually play little shows of, like, {{{100}}} people, so I’m, like, okay, this is fun.

Full on arena rock?
Huge arena, yeah. It’s crazy. We found out, like, two days before. Luckily we have really good players. I’m the weakest link in the band, for sure.

Who else is playing at the convention?
My producer is playing guitar, {{{Jimmy}}} Paxton is one of the best drummers I’ve ever had the pleasure to play with, Ed Roth is playing keyboards and Aamion [Goodwin], my fiance, he’s playing bass. We’re just playing one song, so we’re teaching him how to play it so he can come. ‘Cause he can’t come unless he’s with the band. He’s like, “I’m not gonna be able to do it.” But I have faith in him.

He doesn’t play bass at all?
He plays guitar a little bit, but… It’s pretty funny. He’s super shy and not the type of guy to be in front of a bunch of people. I just want to go to see him play, to see if he freezes up or he’s gonna rock out, or what.

What other bands are playing?
I think Sara Evans, a country singer, she’s playing, and I think one other guy, but I’m not sure who it is. I don’t know country, but Aamion is, like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I get to meet Sara Evans.” So I guess if you’re into country you’d know who she is.

Don’t the Democrats have Springsteen, Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam promoting them?
I know, totally. It’s definitely cool to be a Democrat, that’s for sure.

So why aren’t you with the cool crowd?
Um, I don’t know. I’ve been doing all these political talk shows and it’s like a war between these guys. I just want to support a president who has the same morals as I do, you know. I’m not even qualified enough to say who’s a better president. I’m voting for Bush because he prays, he believes in traditional marriage, and he loves God, and I love God too. If there was a different Democrat I might vote for him, but with politics you can’t win with anyone, so I don’t even know why we’re talking about it.

Well, we’re talking about it because you’re playing at the Republican National Convention.
Yeah, okay, I know. I support a president that prays. And there’s a lot of things about Kerry that, as I look into it I’m, like, I would never vote for this guy.

Do you own any guns?
No, I don’t. But I really want to go shoot ’em though. I think that would be really fun. But, you know, everyone’s like, “Oh, this war is Bush’s fault” and they see Fahrenheit {{{911}}} and everything, but if you check out what really happened, if you really start looking at the evidence, a lot more things come to light. Honestly, I’d rather fight a war on someone else’s territory than mine. Everyone’s always talking about how Bush is such a bad guy, but at the same time these terrorists are coming and killing innocent people every day. Over here, over there, they just want to take over the world.

I could be totally wrong. I just want to build a bridge between everybody being so against one side or the other. It seems really immature to me how everyone’s all up against each other. Like the guy who made Fahrenheit 911, it’s like, he just made a hundred million dollars or something off that movie, and so much of that stuff isn’t true. He makes it looks a certain way.

Michael Moore definitely argues one side of the case.
Yeah, but that’s what’s so beautiful about our country, that he can do that. That’s what everyone loves about America, that there’s so much diversity and we can do what we want, but it seems like there’s not much unity anymore. There’s no unity in this country.

Look, you’ve got me all heated up about politics. I’m not upset if someone wants to vote for Kerry or if someone’s a Democrat. That’s their choice and everyone’s allowed to have whatever choice they want. They wanted us to chant “four more years” at the convention and we’re, like, we’re not here to rally against anybody, we’re here because we want to support our country. And we’re going to play for our president and, you know, Madison Square Garden! That’s what you dream to play. It’s crazy.

Does that blow your mind?
I’m totally tripping out about it. I’m like, okay, this is nuts. And I’m just trying to get the message across that it’s not about one side or the other, it’s about building a bridge in between. Let’s get together and be a nation. They took out “under God” from the pledge of allegiance, so they should take out “one nation,” because we’re not . . .Phew! I thought we were going to talk to me about some surf photo you saw.

Are you kidding, this is SURFING Mag. Only hard hitting news stuff for us. What are your feelings about Bush’s environmental stance?
Honestly, I’m not qualified to talk about that. I don’t really know enough about politics to even have this conversation. I just know enough that I stand behind someone who sticks to his decision and prays and… I mean, aren’t all Republicans not for the environment? Isn’t that, like, a normal thing? Aren’t, like, Democrats for pro-choice and aren’t Republicans against environmental things and more for oil, money and power? And I don’t agree with that. To be honest, I’ve never been a voter until this year. We’re, like, surfers. I just want to surf and play my guitar and hang out with my friends. I know that sounds really selfish, and this year I’ve become a lot more aware of our situation.

Well, the Surfrider Foundation is pretty terrified of Bush, so if you see him…
I’ll just tell him, “Can you please save our reefs.” I will too. I’m not afraid to say that. Environment is really important, but I’m looking at this thing as a whole. We’ll always be able to find clean water somewhere, but our country is on the brink of destruction. I just pray that whatever happens is what God wants. And if it’s Kerry, then I’m gonna stand behind him, and if it’s Bush I’ll stand behind him. Honestly, I just want our country to be in a good place.

I think everyone does.
Yeah, but everyone gets really crazy about one side or the other. But it’s really just about the cause. It has nothing to do with the individual anymore; it’s just about the cause.

Hopefully, after this is over, everyone can…
Simmer. Simmer down now.
