San Diego surfer Emery Kauanui dies tragically

Wind'n Sea local Emery Kauanui, 24, passed away Monday, May 27, 2007 after sustaining head injuries last week. Kauanui was admitted to a local hospital for head trauma sustained in front of his home after an altercation at a bar in La Jolla became violent. Police have arrested three men believed responsible for the attack.

Emery started surfing for Liquid Foundations when he was 17, and spent 7 years with them. Todd Bartlett, owner of Liquid Foundations, said Emery was a great surfer with a great spirit. "He had that aloha spirit and just wanted to surf every day," said Bartlett. He was also sponsored by Liquid Foundation, Rip Curl, Jen Optics and Placebo Surfboards.

Emery was born on Kauai, but had been living in San Diego for some time. He still has family in Hawaii, and would visit the islands a few times a year. He was goofy-footed, and rode equally well on small and big waves. His favorite break was the left at Wind'n Sea. Emery planned on opening a camp on Kauai for children without families.
