2005 Globe WCT Fiji: Trials

Florida's Pete Mendia scored the first perfect 10 of the Globe WCT Fiji when he won the Trials for the event this morning in a building, clean 5 to 6 foot Cloudbreak swell.

"I only got the word from Globe that I was in the trials a few days ago and I'm just stoked to be here. To then get a 10 is just amazing," Pete said."For my first wave this morning, I pulled an 8.7 and it just felt right."About four minutes to go in my heat, a wave just stood up with a great wall and I just hit it.

"I almost pulled out of the wave half way through but just kept driving through the barrel and I hoped I'd got a 9, but to score a 10 is just sick."

Joining Pete in the main event, after coming second in the trials, Bronte's (NSW) Luke Hitchings scored two excellent rides and only narrowly beating Portland's (Victoria) Adam Robertson by less than a point.
