30-year veteran photo editor gets recognized for his unparalleled contributions to the sportClick here for a look at some of Flame’s classic moments over the years.

On February 22, 2005, the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association announced its annual honorees for this year's Waterman's Weekend. Among those chosen for awards, SURFING Magazine's own Larry "Flame" Moore was selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Moore is SURFING's Director of Photography and has reigned over the SURFING photo lab for the better part of three decades. In such time, he has been responsible for driving the sport's image machine through notable sessions at Todos, Natividad and the notorious unveiling of Cortes Bank. He has captured a lifetime of incredible photos, but to more his credit, has captured the attention and respect of all of us in a career bearing the marks of fearless dedication and passion.

Flame is accredited with paving a road to success for many of today's surf photographers, as well as the success of SURFING Magazine. Throughout his 30-year career, Flame captured more than 43 cover shots. However, his personal mission was conquering Cortes Bank -- a mission that took the planning and waiting of 11 years to come to life. When it finally did, in January 2001, the event was a symphony of monumental waves that pushed the limits of big-wave surfing and proved to be Flame's crowning achievement.

Still in a day-to-day struggle with a brain tumor, Moore continues to show evidence of his overwhelming courage and dedication to his work as he makes it to the office every day and keeps his finger on the pulse. When told he would be receiving the award, he said, "Now I have a new goal to achieve. Count on me still being here in August!"

The award ceremony will also be honoring Andy Irons as Waterman of the Year, and former executive director of the Surfrider Foundation, Chris Evans, as Environmentalist of the Year.

The Waterman's Weekend returns this year to The St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa, beginning on August 26 with the Waterman's Classic {{{Golf}}} Tournament, and culminates on Saturday, August 27, with the Waterman's Ball and Auction. Sponsorship packages for both the 2005 Waterman's Classic and Waterman's Ball will be on sale in May. Individual tickets for the Waterman's Ball are scheduled to go on sale in July.
