Fred Patacchia Wins The 2009 Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro

Nike just did it. The final day of the 6-star Prime Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior was a smash, what with its unpredicted spring weather, hundreds on hand and lack of swine flu in sight. Whether it was the large quantity of beach Barbie dolls patrolling the cobbles or just something in the warm Southern California air, the stage seemed to become perfectly set to crown the Pro and Junior victors. And despite valiant efforts from the likes of local boy Nate Yeomans and {{{Malibu}}} prince Dillon Perillo, it was Hawaii's Fred Patacchia and Kai Barger that took advantage of the prime conditions and ran away with the show.

Upgraded to a prestigious 6-star Prime, Nike's sole WQS event dangled serious 'QS points and a total purse worth $145,000. So it wasn't a surprise to see a mosaic of shredders, young and old, cross continental — from Rob Machado to Dane Reynolds to Dusty Payne to Nat Young, the contest seemed to undulate from one mind-blowing realm of shred philosophy to the next. And even as contestants dropped out, no one seemed to want to leave. Blame it on the beach scenery. Blame it on the mysterious wave-machine that kicked into high for the final rounds and delivered copious mounds of Lowers goodness. Blame it on something, 'cause it was worth staying for.

The Oakley Pro Junior final was the first to hit the water. It was like watching a Die Hard movie, except it was Kai Barger blasting everything in sight instead of Johan McClane. Early on, it was a Dingo-esque Dillon Perillo that led Barger, Davey Cathels and Kiron Jabour in a serious massacre on the A-frames pouring in. But a little over half-way through the final, Barger put his ASP World Junior championship confidence and momentum into overdrive and commenced to combo everyone with a series of left and right surgical strikes that rivaled even the heaviest ripping going on in the 'QS field. It was enough to leave everyone scrambling for second and to secure Kai a trip to the Oakley Pro Junior Championships held at Keramas later this year. "I love that contest," Kai said after being chaired up the beach. "It kept running through my head out there and it's what I'm most stoked about right now."

And those Hawaiians, man, they stick together, no? So when Fred Patacchia found himself in the WQS Men's final against defending champ Ben Bourgeois, it's no surprise that he looked to Kai's victory just moments before for a heap of inspiration. "Kai's win definitely got me pumped for the final," Freddy P said afterwards. "His generation — the next generation — looks so insane." Perhaps taking a page from Kai's blazing backhand attack, the fellow goofyfoot amassed a 9.0 and 7.5 to put Benny B on the ropes early on and never looked back.

Though Hawaii may have stolen all of the prize money and first-place hardware today, everyone seemed to get something out of the event — except for maybe some swine flu. Which, of course, allowed for more mingling and full day's worth of cross-generational, world-class ripping. So, what ever Nike just did, let's hope they just do it again next year.
