There’s something about the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout that we love. Maybe it’s the jersey-less free surf display or the unorthodox format. Maybe it’s that the conditions continually offer up some of the heaviest days we see each and every year during the Hawaii season. This year was no different. Koa Rothman blazed his way to the win. Scratching into a bomb that produced the quality and enchantment that showcased just how heavy yet beautiful Pipe can be. For anyone who remembers Derek Ho’s run at Pipe Masters in 1986, Derek’s final wave left everyone awestruck. It solidified Derek as one of the best barrel riders in the world. We think Koa’s wave produced that same sort of messaging. As for Koa’s take, “I’m still in disbelief that I caught that wave! Thanks to everyone for the love. Also, I want to give a shout-out to our good friend Kalani Chapman. We went through a pretty traumatic experience yesterday, so glad you’re ok brother. This one is for you.”

Team Weedmaps consisting of Bruce Irons, Mason Ho, Tyler Newton, and Nathan Fletcher took the team victory.
