“This one is for Andy,” said Kalen Galtes after winning the Open Juniors division of the NSSA Hawaii contest last weekend.

As one would expect, the weekend was largely about Andy Irons. Manaka Delovio led the competitors in a prayer before they all paddled out to pay their respects to the three-time world champ. The contestants, who competed in the 2- to 3-foot surf at Banyans on the Big Island, surfed hard for their fallen Hawaiian hero.

And nobody surfed harder than Kalen. The young goofyfoot blazed his way into the finals and then past Kain Daly, Chaz Kinoshita and Kalani David for the win. It was his first victory of the 2010/2011 season.

“The waves were really difficult, but it felt good to win the contest,” Kalen said. “I was just really bummed and tripped out on Andy Irons dying.”

Nobody cleared a path to pro surfing for Outer Island groms like Andy Irons. They won't forget.
