Rip Curl GromSearch 2005

2005 RIP CURL GROMSEARCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, LUKASIK & BLANCHARD, PACK THEIR BAGS FOR BELLSThe nation's premiere groms gathered together at Salt Creek Beach, Dana Point, California to take part in the highly anticipated Rip Curl GromSearch National Championships presented by Nintendo. Explosive surfing was an understatement as groms from all over the country set fire to the chilly November waters in hopes of capturing the prestigious Rip Curl GromSearch Title and the chance to win a trip to Bells Beach, Australia to compete in the International GromSearch Final set to take place during the Rip Curl Pro in April 2006.As the first ray of light stretched across Salt Creek's misty shoreline trails of whitewater revealed perfect 3-5ft waves and oil slick conditions, the ultimate arena to showcase the progressive surfing of today's youth. Surf hungry groms from all over the nation qualified for the National Final by placing within the top 3 from events in their respective regions; however, no other groms showcased their desire to win more than San Clemente's Jeff Lukasik and Kauai's Alana Blanchard. Lukasik had Bells in his sights as he fended off the highly talented surfing of Tory Meister and Kyle Ramey throughout the final of the Boys 16/U Division. Ramey was on fire all day but couldn't find the waves he needed seal the deal in the final; nonetheless, he did pick up 20 Donkey Dollars from announcer Ryan Dible by blasting a beyond vertical backside lip bash, a maneuver untouched by any competitor throughout the event. Young Hawaiian, Tory Meister also showcased his amazing repertoire of surfing maneuvers but was unable to connect the dots in the final. Lukasik's smooth rail work and explosive turns allowed him to secure numerous high scores earning himself not only a GromSearch national title but also a trip to Bells Beach, Australia to compete in the GromSearch International Final. In the Girls 16/U division a classic match up came down to the wire as best friends and sparring partners Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton took aim at winning the National Title and a chance to fly to Bells. Hamilton had judges and spectators in disbelief as she repeatedly surfed waves to near perfection. Many of the girls put up a fight against Hamilton's scores; however, it would be Alana Blanchard who answered back loudest. With the combination of lip crushing maneuvers and lightning speed, Blanchard made it apparent she would be packing her bags for Bells. The future looks bright for the young Kauaian as she now heads to Australia to take on the rest of the GromSearch Champions from around the world.Alex Smith kept the Kauaian flag waving as he earned himself a GromSearch National Title by dominating competition in the Boys 14/U Division. When it came down to the mini groms local Huntington Beach ripper, Luke Davis edged out Newport's Andrew Doheny for the 12/U National Title.Notable mention goes out the Andrew Doheny for taking home the '2005 Mike {{{Morgan}}} Sportsmanship Award' for his outstanding attitude in and out of the water. The late Mike Morgan spent years as Rip Curl's GromSearch announcer infecting kids across the nation with his positive attitude and love for surfing. Rip Curl will continue to present this award in loving memory of the surfing world's late friend. Jeff Lukasik and Alana Blanchard will now pack their bags in anticipation for the International GromSearch Finals set to take place at the Rip Curl Pro - Bells Beach, Australia in April of 2006. From there the two outstanding surfers will take on other champions from around the world including countries such as Brazil, South Africa, France, New Zealand, Australia and more.
