Congratulations Tyler Wright, 2016 World Champ

It’s pretty amazing that Courtney pushed it this far. Girl is tenacious.

But Tyler Wright’s 2016 domination was undeniable. With four wins in six final appearances having surfed only nine out of 10 total events, Tyler showed unparalleled levels of consistency en route to her maiden title. Over the course of the season, Tyler defeated her year-long rival Courtney Conlogue, along with Carissa Moore and Steph Gilmore — two women that have owned professional competitions for the past decade — all with one event to spare.

Her 2016 World Title came under the tutelage of Glen “Micro” Hall — a past CT surfer and current coach for both Tyler Wright and Matt Wilkinson. Hall’s techniques have been highly impactful to both of his CT students, as the Aussie duo reached new competitive heights during his first year as a full-time coach. While Wilkinson won the first two CT events of his career and is currently on the outskirts of the men’s World Title race, Wright dominated her season from front to back.

This title is the first for the Wright lineage, which is impressive considering the family has three current professionals (Mikey, Owen, Tyler) and two ex-pros (Kirby and Tim). Her brother Owen, who is currently on the injured reserve, was in a title race of his own in 2011 but eventually came up short against 11x World Champ Kelly Slater. And thusly Tyler is the queen of the Wrightville!

Above all else, we’d like to offer our sincere congrats to Tyler for her monumental win. Now grab some vino and celebrate!
