2004 Xcel Pro – Day 1

Sunset Beach, Oahu, Hawaii-While the United States voted in the return of President Bush, the next morning contest officials elected to commence competition for the 21st Annual Xcel Pro presented by Sobe No Fear.

The Xcel Pro stands as the official kick off to the North Shore surf season every year. Without exception Wednesday morning saw heated competition at Sunset Beach with some of the world's top athletes vying for precious world tour points and $50,000 in prize money. Ocean conditions were excellent with high performance surfing in 3′ to 6′ pristine surf.

The 1st round and half of the 2nd round were completed today. Standout performances were seen from Hawaii’s Joel Centeio, Maui's Hank Gaskel, Scotty Fountain, previous champ Fred Patacchia, and Sunset local Makua Rothman. Scoring the single highest point total for the day was Haleiwa's Ross Williams who landed perfect 10’s to win his heat with the longest tube ride of the day.

Two more days of competition will continue with a larger swell forecasted this weekend.
