Gloom and bloom…
The sun didn’t rise and shine in Seignosse today. It unhappily rolled out bed, brushed its teeth and threw on a pair of khakis with a foggy grey sky for a shirt. But even though it wasn’t the morning of all French mornings, there was a fun wave to be ridden and 18 of the world’s best women there to ride it. We saw three rounds of the 2014 Roxy Pro today, 16 heats of le femme. And what a day it was. We quickly learned that it takes more than a morning fog bank and an offshore breeze to cool off a world title race hotter than Jessica Alba eating a popsicle in Death Valley’s July!

Losers welcome…
While only six gals won in Round 1, an additional 12 them didn’t quite lose. The three-woman heats ain’t got no time for losers. Neither does this section of the recap. Here’s who Round 1’d the best.

Courtney Conlogue: Here’s something: Courtney Conlogue will contend for the world title in 2015. She’s good enough to, and she proved it today in France.
Stephanie Gilmore: Here’s something: Stephanie Gilmore already won 5 world titles and she’s contending for number seese as we speak. Steph powered (literally) through Round 1 today, though lady luck bailed on her for Round 3.
Carissa Moore: Carissa was devastated after her loss at Lowers — just check her blog. Apparently, adversity is as good as gasoline cause ‘Riss used it as fuel today.
Bianca Buitendag: They (or at least I) call her GirlNat for a reason. You don’t want to draw her when she’s going right, especially if your name is Nikki Van Dijk or Lakey Peterson.

Losers welcome… again
Remember when I said that Round 1 ain’t got no time for losers? Round 2 does. And so we lost Laura Enever, Alessa Quizon, Lee-Ann Curren, Alana Blanchard, Paige Hareb and Coco Ho today. I poured each and every one of them a glass of Bordeux wine and offered a them soothing hug — a fine consolation prize, if I do say so myself. Here are four people I didn’t hug today, because they won in Round 3.

Malia Manuel: Malia is the Julian Wilson of the 2015 Women’s WCT. She’s incredibly talented, but the results just haven’t been coming. One finally came today, as she sent Pauline Ado and world champ contender Tyler Wright to Round 4.
Sally Fitzgibbons: Is Sally the best female surfer alive right now? Maybe, maybe not, but she’s the current ratings leader. Sally falls into the whole “wants this more than anyone category” and her 16.56 points in Round 3 are proof.
Courtney Conlogue: She beat Bianca and Steph in Round 3. Told. You. So.
Carissa Moore: It wasn’t the best heat of the round, but Carissa hammered one out and look at her now. Quarterfinals, thank you very much.

They say that tomorrow…
They might, maybe, possibly could run some men’s heats tomorrow. Or not. —Women’s Surf Correspondant Brendan Buckley
