The sacred weekend
Weekends are not taken lightly in France. As dawn cracked this morning, the sand and sea at Seignosse became abuzz with life. Some folks went surfing, some went sailing. Some were honest surf fans there for the 2014 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France, others wore sunglasses of the whitest Parisian white and were there for Instagram haymakers. Some were nuns and others were Gabriel Medina, but all of them were clothed — which was only because it was still chilly. Then the sun rose, the tide dropped, the earth warmed, the clothing disintegrated and after an hour delay, the Roxy Pro Round 4 was sent out. Let’s get you up to speed on all that, shall we?

Sister Act…
Did I mention there were nuns? Because there were definitely nuns. Toting a surfboard. Getting autographs. Being holy. Raging. They never burst into song and dance a la Sister Act, but the four heats of women’s surfing was more than enough to keep us all entertained. Especially from these two.

Bianca Buitendag: GirlNat got an 8 for two turns — a worthy 8, if I do say so myself. Her backhand is sharper than the knife of Brutus and it stabbed Nikki Van Dijk today.
Stephanie Gilmore: I hate to be the guy who talks about floaters, but I’m going to go ahead and be the guy who talks about floaters right now. Stephanie beat Lakey Peterson today and I loved her floaters. I mean I loved them. She would do that little tail drop thing before coming down and it was so rock-n-roll. Front row at The Who back when Pete Townshend used to beat the shit out of his guitars rock-n-roll. The judges agreed, threw her the horns and gave her 17.60 points.

Winning strides…
Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds were in the first heat of men’s Round 2. Steph and Lakey were still dueling as the two men walked towards the water’s edge. And when I say they walked, what I mean is that they were swallowed by a storm of screaming French. In fact, the cheer for their walking was the loudest cheer of the whole day. Fantastic gait, I suppose. Here’s what else was worthy of applause.

Kelly Slater: Kelly VS. Dane? Forever exciting. And it was today, although confusing after the first exchange. Kelly did a handful of turns. Dane did two and an air. Kelly: 8.00. Dane: 6.67. Huh? It confused Dane, it confused Kelly and it confused every fan who didn’t hand Kelly a love letter today (that happened). Kelly went on to stick a fine air for 8.27 points and won the heat fair and square, but you’d have to wonder if the scoring on the first exchange got in Dane’s head.
Mick Fanning: 9.20. For turns. This is Mick Fanning. He was even landing airs by the end of the heat!
John John Florence: Even though he lost to Julian in Round 1, John hasn’t lost a step since Lowers. He’s still bringing the most perfect medley of airs and turns to each heat. He sent Raoni to the land of his language today.
Travis Logie: Logie! You see his 8.57? Wonderful!

They say that tomorrow…
We will crown Malia Manuel as our women’s champ. Bold and accurate prediction or a jinx? We’ll see! —Brendan Buckley
