They said it wouldn’t be as crazy. No concerts. More of a police presence. A focus back on the surfing. But reputations don’t just die over the course of the year, and the 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing is already one of the weirdest, wildest and most fun showings in the history of the event. Teenagers are finding new, innovative ways to embarrass their entire gene pool via the English language and body paint. The crowd is as eccentric as ever. And the unpredictable heats won’t cease — Alex Ribeiro beating Dane Reynolds, Conner Coffin and Alejo Muniz? Totally saw that coming… The waves have been strangely fun and everything else has been just plain strange. Ah, it’s good to be back. Keep checking in, because we’ll be bringing you the triumphs and tribulations from all shades of the US Open. It’s going to get weird. But after all, that’s what makes this event beautiful.
